Features of the Aptos blockchain

Aptos is designed as a flexible, easily updatable platform for the ever-changing Web3 market landscape. As the developers state in the project's whitepaper, Aptos presents a unique combination of consensus, new smart contract design, security, performance and decentralization.

The interaction of users, applications and smart contracts on the network is provided by the Move VM, which is supposed to compete with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) "monopoly." According to Pontem's Move development team, the Aptos virtual machine has the potential to become the standard for integrating applications from Cosmos, Solana, Polkadot and even Ethereum.

The Aptos blockchain uses the AptosBFT consensus algorithm based on HotStuff, an implementation of the Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) protocol created specifically for Diem.

BFT provides a high level of protection against malicious actions, allowing the network to operate correctly even if a third of the validators are compromised or out of service. This consensus mechanism is also used in blockchains such as Hedera Hashgraph, Cosmos, Solana and Everscale.

According to Aptos Labs engineer Joshua Lind, test results showed that thanks to its modular design and parallel execution of transactions, Aptos can handle more than 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) without sacrificing security or decentralization. And the transaction completion rate, i.e. the delay between sending and execution, is less than one second.

How testing works

Public testing of the Aptos network began in May 2022. According to the roadmap, it is divided into several stages with specific goals:

- Aptos Incentivized Testnet 1 (AIT1). Registration of first participants, launch of limited node network, documentation for validator. Completed in June.

- AIT2. Validation of stacking mechanism and economic incentives for validators via "decentralized taps". Completed in August.

- AIT3. Implementation of an online voting system and support mechanisms for new validators. Successfully completed in mid-September.

- AIT4. Stress test of validators before mainnet launch. Started in mid-September 2022.

At each stage, participants were offered rewards in Aptos test tokens for completing certain tasks. Once launched, they will be exchanged for the project's mainnet cryptocurrency. Detailed technical documentation is available for everyone who wants to participate in Aptos testing.
